The Chicago Hilal Committee did not receive any authentic moon sighting report from anywhere in the United States on Sunday, August 31, 2008 (Shaban 29, 1429). As such, the committee concluded at 10:10pm CDT that Shaban would finish its cycle of 30 days and Ramadan would begin on Tuesday, September 2, 2008.
InshAllah, the Chicago Hilal Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Islamic Center of Chicago to determine the end of Ramadan and the date of Eid-ul-Fitr (Shawwal 1, 1429). According to astronomical data, the moon is expected to be sighted on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 and Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

1st Night of Ramadan = Monday, September 1, 2008
Ramadan 1, 1429 = Tuesday, September 2, 2008
Itikaf Begins = Sunday, September 21, 2008
Ramadan 29, 1429 = September 30, 2008
Shawwal 1, 1429 (Eid-ul-Fitr) = Wednesday, October 1, 2008 or Thursday, October 2, 2008

The Chicago Hilal Committee will meet on Sunday, August 31, 2008 (Shaban 29, 1429) at the Islamic Center of Chicago after Maghrib (7:29pm CDT). Insha’Allah, updates are expected to be made every 10-15 minutes beginning at 8:00pm. The 1st of Ramadan will either be Monday, September 1st or Tuesday, September 2nd.
